What is Alpha?
The Alpha Course is an opportunity to step back from the busyness of life
and explore the meaning of our existence. It provides an introduction to
the Christian faith through a series of 8 short talks
over the term.
Each Monday evening everyone meets up for a meal followed by a short talk,
addressing key issues relating to the Christian faith. After the talk we
split into smaller groups where there is plenty of opportunity to discuss and
ask questions over coffee, and maybe a donut! Alpha is a great place to
express your point of view - no question is too simple or too hostile.
Alpha for Students in Glasgow is relaxed and informal: it is open to
anyone, student or otherwise. It is primarily aimed at those who are
interested in investigating Christianity, regardless of belief or church
attendance.
The Alpha Course originated in London and now runs in 28,700 places in over
150 countries worldwide. It is supported by all the major Christian
denominations including Anglican, Roman Catholic, Baptist, Presbyterian,
Methodist, Pentecostal and Free Church.
"Those
who stand for nothing fall for anything."
Alexander Hamilton
After
the launch
night, Alpha will be running every Monday from 11th February, at 6.30pm in
the KOG Cafe in the Merchant City, just behind TJ Hughes.
Each week there will be a free meal (beat that!), followed
by a short talk and plenty of time to vent your view over coffee (and maybe
even donuts). More blurb
here.

The KOG cafe can be found at 85 Parnie Street, just parallel to the
Trongate - indicated by blue square on map.
If you're coming from Argyle Street... continue to the end of the
pedestrianised section (at M&S), here it turns into the Trongate (slightly
less glamorous!). Walk straight on and then after MacDonalds turn right
at the traffic lights. Then take the 1st right into Parnie Street - the
KOG is just on your left at the end. Getting lost is part of the
adventure!

sorry - looks like you
missed it! You can still come along on Monday's
at the KOG Cafe though!
It's a choice of whether to finish that essay, watch a DVD or spend a couple
of hours relaxing with your friends over a pint and some pancakes! How
often do you take a minute to stop and think about life's bigger questions?
How to find the Union? From the stairs up from Buchanan Bus
Station onto Cowcaddens Road, cross over the pedestrian crossing and head
straight on into the university campus. When you find yourself going
down 3 or 4 steps, the Union is on your left, next door to the Campus Shop.
Our time at university is a unique period of our lives. Never again
will we have so much time on our hands - time to try new experiences and time
to discover what makes us tick. Alpha is a great way to make the most of
this opportunity - a chance to think about the bigger questions of life: the
meaning and purpose of our existence. A free meal every week when you're
a student can't be a bad thing either! Furthermore you may just find
Alpha provides a doorway to exploring the Christian faith and what relevance
God has in our lives.

man dies, but not every man truly lives"

alpha weekend away

About half way through the Alpha Course we
have a weekend away. It's a great time just to get away from the city
smoke and clear your head a bit in rural Scotland! It's also fab to
get to know some of the other guys on the course while discovering a bit
more about the concept of the Holy Spirit.
The 2005 Alpha weekend will be on 19th and
20th March. More details to follow shortly. Cost should be
minimal.
